Serving as a Director of a Governing Body offers the opportunity to contribute skills, experience, wisdom and knowledge to the organisation. The Board carries the ultimate responsibility for an organisation’s policies, projects and activities. Therefore its performance has a profound impact on the organisation’s ability to fulfil its mission successfully. Improving the Boards effectiveness is a way of improving the overall performance of the organisation.

One of the best ways for a Board to strengthen its contribution is periodically to assess its own performance. Properly conducted, a self-assessment offers tangible and intangible benefits to the participating Board members, to the Chief Executive, to the organisation and therefore its members.
