CCPR chair and chief executive meet new minister for sport
Brigid Simmonds and Tim Lamb held a productive first meeting with new sports minister, Gerry Sutcliffe, on 24 July. At the meeting they outlined the role of CCPR and the contribution its members make to achieving key government objectives. Mr. Sutcliffe expressed interest in CCPR’s proposals to further enhance the community amateur sports club scheme, and CCPR subsequently provided further briefing for the minister on this.
EU proposals for a directive on quality standards for surface water
A proposal for a direction on environmental quality standards for surface water was initiated by the European Commission in July. The Commission is seeking to put in place a Council and European Parliament Directive on the subject, amending earlier directives. The Commission recognises that chemical pollution of surface water has a negative impact not only on the environment, but also on humans through eating seafood and fish, drinking water and water sports.
Planning White Paper
On 21 May 2007, the Government published the Planning White Paper, Planning for a Sustainable Future. The White Paper sets out a programme of proposed reforms to the planning system to be taken forward in the next three years. These reforms will, for the first time, embrace all development consent regimes, including those for major energy, water, transport and waste development, as well as the town and country planning system. Changes to the planning regime present enormous opportunities to enhance the provision of sporting and recreational activity in the UK and CCPR’s response encourages the Government to take full account of how this can be achieved.
