National conference 2010

Conference presentations

CCPR held its 2010 national conference at the Grange St Paul's Hotel on 5 May.

Fair Play in Sport - Fact or Fantasy?

Is fair play in sport an outdated concept? Is it naïve to think that we can all be fair to each in other in competitive environments? Come and debate some of the biggest issues affecting sport with some of the sharpest minds in the sector. From cheating and doping, to race and sexuality, fair play touches on every sport and activity at every level. But in light of a litter of scandals in elite sport last year, are we in danger of losing touch with what fair play means and how it impacts on participants from the grassroots up?

Speakers will include:

  • UK Sport Chair, Baroness Sue Campbell
  • NBA Hall of Fame star and psychologist John Amaechi
  • International cricket referee and former England star, Chris Broad
  • Gordon Taylor , chief executive of the Professional Players' Association
  • Internationally acclaimed academic, Prof Sigmund Loland
  • Award-winning journalist Sue Mott
  • Athlete Diane Modahl

In addition, this year's event will feature a range of hands-on, tip-filled practical workshop sessions:

ISA – How sport can play fair by children and vulnerable adults. Practical tips, guidance and advice on how to navigate ISA from Elizabeth Hubbard and Dot Crawford of TMGCRB

EU and Lisbon – Fair play! How Europe and the Lisbon Treaty can help UK governing bodies fund sport and find clarity. Jaume Bardolet of the EU Commission Sports Unit on what Lisbon means for sport and why it won’t go away if you close your eyes…

Equalities Act - Does equality mean fairness in sport and recreation? Practical advice from Alan Christie, Director of Policy at the Equality and Human Rights Commission, on how sport can meet the requirements of the Act.

Bidding for major events – how to make friends and influence people. A practical session on how to successfully bid for events and how to make a bidding process open and transparent. Led by successful bidder Adrian Christie, CEO of Badminton England.
