Promoting participation
The original objectives of the CCPR in 1935 were:
- To encourage as many people as possible (male and female) to participate in all forms of sport and physical recreation.
- To provide the separate governing bodies of the individual sports with a central organisation that would represent and promote their individual and collective interests and
- To increase public knowledge and awareness of the importance of sport.
Amongst CCPR's first endeavours was its contribution to the work of the National Fitness Council, set up by the government to provide training for teachers in physical education and recreation and to enhance facilities for sport and recreation.
It then began to concentrate on encoruaging sporting participation amongst young people, in particular those aged between 14 and 20. In conjunction with the Football Association, it devised a ‘Fitness for Service’ campaign for those awaiting call up to the armed forces, as well as launching the first of many schemes to train people in sport and recreation and increase the supply of voluntary leaders.
