A new role for CCPR

yachts in seaBetween 1935 and 1972 the CCPR was the main sports administration body in the UK. CCPR also owned and ran most of the major sporting facilities in the country including Crystal Palace, Bisham Abbey, Lilleshall, Plas y Brenin and Holme Pierrepont

In addition to the main centres there were also sites and buildings throughout the country including 10 regional offices.

All this was achieved solely through charitable donations until 1961 when the CCPR was given grant funding by the Ministry of Education.

In 1972 the Government set up the GB Sports Council along with separate Sports Councils for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Their role was to allocate and administer Government funds in sport.

As these Councils were direct arms of the Government, a vaccuum was created for a body which would remain independent of government and represent the interests of the sport and recreation sector

CCPR agreed to be that body and, in return for transferring its assets to the Sports Council, the Council undertook to make available such resources and facilities to CCPR that they would reasonably require in order to carry out this important job of protecting and providing for sport. That is the CCPR which exists today.
