Developing Education & Training

National Governing Bodies and other national sporting organisations have a rich background in providing training and qualifications to support the development of their sport. Many of these qualifications are in demand from employers such as local authorities, and are even demanded by health and safety legislation. The last decade however has seen significant change within vocational education and training, which presents both a challenge and an opportunity for National Governing Body qualifications.

These developments are outlined below, and CCPR hopes that you will find this information helpful in deciding how your organisation might respond to these challenges.

The National Qualifications Framework

The Government has introduced a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) to accredit the vast array of qualifications that exists, not just in sport and physical recreation, but in all sectors of education and employment (with the exception of higher education).

A number of national sporting organisations have already sought accreditation to the National Qualifications Framework. Click here to find out about the experiences of the Swimming Teachers Association and the British Orienteering Federation.

Once your qualifications are accredited they will be eligible for Learning and Skills Council funding. Click here to find about British Gymnastics experience.

To find out how to establish a partnership with a Further Education provide, please click here.

If your organisation would like to seek accreditation for its qualifications, it would be valuable to assess your readiness first. Click here to download a short self assessment questionnaire, based on the experiences of organisations that have already been through the process. This will help you to consider those issues which may impact on how you proceed.

The CCPR has created a series of fact sheets about each part of the NQF process. If you would like further information about an awarding partnership click here, if you would prefer to create your own awarding body click here and if you would like further information about putting your qualifications on to the NQF click here.

The UK Coaching Certificate

Following the publication of the Government Plan for Sport in 2001, a Coaching Task Force was established to make recommendations regarding the future of coach education and coach deployment in England. These recommendations included the establishment of a UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC, formerly the National Coaching Certificate NCC) which would create consistency in coach education systems across sport. The development of the UKCC is being led by sportscoach UK in partnership with National Governing Bodies of sport. For more information visit www.sportscoachuk.org .
You can receive e-mail updates on progress against the recommendations of the Coaching task Force by registering your e-mail address at coaching@culture.gsi.gov.uk

CCPR Research
